6) Paden Aron McCartney (April 08, 1827 - August 08, 1913)

Paden was born in Washington Co., PA (source: McCartney family bible; and National Archives Pension certificate #768934 & 768924). Paden was described in his military pension document as 5'9" tall with blue eyes, complexion light, and brown hair. 

Paden married Erie Ann Lake June 19, 1849 in Morrow Co., OH.  Paden and Erie Ann's eight children were Sanford born September 9, 1848 in IL married Martha (Lockard) Whiteside; Oscar Winfield born August 6, 1850 also in IL married Lucinda Layman; Washington born 1851; James A. born April 2, 1856 married Senia Case; Paden born December 19, 1861; Mary Jane born December 19, 1861 married David Benjamin; Doc born 1863; and Sant born 1865.

Sometime between the birth of his fourth and fifth child and one year prior to brothers Isaac and George, Paden enlisted under the name Padinarin for a 3-year term in Co. E. 11th Regiment Iowa Volunteers commanded by Captain McCloney at Tipton, IA on September 23, 1861. Just nine months after joining, Paden was honorably discharged at St. Louis, MO for disability June 16, 1862. Eighteen years later on April 13, 1880, Paden filed a Declaration For Original Invalid Pension stating while serving in Boonville, MO on or about December 10, 1861, he contracted an indirect inguinal hernia on his left side and was treated at the hospital, "New House of Refuge" in St. Louis. His application for pension was approved at $20/month.

On January 1, 1873, eight years after the birth of their eighth child, Erie Ann died in Elk Co. KS. Three years after his wife's death, Paden, age 49 of Elk Co., KS, married Lydia Maranda (________) Whaley, age 38 of Greenwood Co., KS, at Charlestown, also in Greenwood Co. on March 14, 1876. Lydia's first husband (Mr. Whaley) passed away October 24, 1865. Paden and Lydia resided in Kingman (Kingman Co.), KS for a number of years before moving to Templeton (San Luis Obispo Co.), CA in 1892 and lastly to Los Gatos (Santa Clara Co.), CA in 1912 where Paden died one year later. Three years after her husband's death, Lydia age 79, while residing in the Woman's Relief Corps Home of San Jose (Santa Clara Co.), CA applied for a widow's pension September 22, 1916. Lydia passed away June 2, 1923.

Children:

Sanford McCartney and his wife Martha (Lockard) Whiteside's four children were Anna; Bert; Minnie Rae and Edgar Lee (Sr.) born 1889 in El Moro, Las Animas Co., CO. married Evelyn Baldwin July 10, 1918 in Los Angeles, CA. Sanford and Martha were married in 1883 in Falls Church, Wilson Co., KS and settled in El Moro, Las Animas Co., CO. Martha was a widow having previously married Joseph Whiteside.

Oscar Winfield McCartney married Lucinda Layman July 25, 1878 in Reno Co., KS. Oscar and Lucinda's seven children were Frank born April 18, 1879 married Effie Docia Keller; Albert born August 19, 1882 married Mabel Clara McCurdy; Anna May born October 4, 1884 married James A. Coyne; Josephine born December 26, 1886 married Charles Morgan Prather; William born November 5, 1888 married Carrie Carmichael; infant male born and died 1893; and infant male born and died 1895. Oscar passed away October 29, 1927 in Kingman, KS and Lucinda June 9, 1930 in Hutchinson, KS.

Mary Jane McCartney married David Benjamin 1884 in Kingman Co., KS. Mary and David's six children were Willard born about 1886; Sarah Elizabeth born about 1888 married Frank Wilhelm; Charles Albert born about 1890; Clarence born about 1894; Arthur Lewis born about 1898; and Clyde born 1903.
