Ephraim & Ann (Sanford) McCartney's Children

Ephraim McCartney whose father came from Ireland, was born September 20, 1772, in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania. Ann Sanford, whose father's name was Abraham Sanford, was born about 1767, in Mifflin county, Pennsylvania, and married in the same county to Ephraim McCartney, in 1790. They had ten or eleven children, eight of whom, six boys and two girls, lived to adult age. The oldest of the boys was named Robert. [Henkle, W. D. (1871). A sketch of the life of Daniel McCartney, the man with a remarkable memory. Columbus, Ohio: Ohio State Journal Job Rooms.]

(1791 - 1837) Robert Isaac McCartney
Robert Isaac McCartney married Lydia Martha Runk December 31, 1811 in Westmoreland Co., PA and had eight children. Robert's parents, Ephraim and Ann, were listed in the same county (Mt. Pleasant Twp.) the year prior in the 1810 Federal census. Robert's family located to Bedford Twp., Bedford Co., PA in 1820, to Nottingham Twp., Washington Co., PA in 1830, and lastly to Marion Co., OH (now Morrow Co.) in 1833 where Robert passed away four years later. Widow Lydia and children continued to live in the area for the next thirteen years after Robert's death as recorded in the 1840 and 1850 census of Marion/Morrow Co., OH.

(1803 - 1871) Catherine McCartney
Catherine McCartney married Jacob Devore in Washington Co., PA around 1819. Her father, Ephraim McCartney, passed away September 9, 1825 in the same county six years later. Catherine and Jacob had ten children. The family located to Carroll Co., OH in 1832, to Columbiana Co., OH in 1836, to Bucks Twp., Hardin Co., OH in 1851 and lastly to Jackson Twp., Hardin Co., OH by 1858 where Catherine and Jacob later passed away. Hardin Co. is adjacent to Marion and Morrow counties where Catherine's older brother Robert and wife Lydia Martha (Runk) McCartney settled.

Note: Catherine was born in Westmoreland Co., PA, the daughter of James and Ann (Sanford) McCartney. [Sanford Devore, Portrait and Biographical Record of Marion and Hardin Counties OH, 1895, pg. 469].

(1807 - 1851) Samuel McCartney
Samuel McCartney married Mary Devore Rhine and had eight known children, five boys and three girls: Ephraim S., born about 1830; David, born about 1832; Peninah Ann, born about 1835; John Boyd, 1836-1916; James Sanford, born about 1838; Martin V., 1839-1917; Elizabeth, 1844-1943; and Sarah, 1846-1945. Samuel's family located to Nottingham Twp., Washington Co., PA in 1830 along with older brother Robert and wife Lydia Martha (Runk) McCartney, and finally moving near his sister, Catherine (McCartney) Devore, in Jackson Twp., Hardin Co., OH in 1850.

(1814 - 1903) David James McCartney
David James McCartney married Margaret Ann Devore August 22, 1832 and had ten known children

Note: David James McCartney's g-g-grandson took the ftdna.com Y-111 DNA test in September 2016; the same Y-111 DNA test taken by the researcher four years earlier and processed at the same lab. Results indicated the researcher and David James McCartney's g-g-grandson's DNA matched with 85% certainty four generations back and with 98% certainty eight generations back. This genetic evidence clearly linked the researcher's ancestor Robert Isaac McCartney as a probable sibling of David James McCartney.

Furthermore, an Ann (Sanford) McCartney was residing with her son David James McCartney and family in the 1850 Federal Census of North Strabane Twp., Washington Co., PA.

Footnotes: There was an obvious connection between McCartney and Devore families in the early development and settlement of PA and OH as they migrated west. Several marriages between the Devore and McCartney families occurred. Three of Ephraim's children married a Devore; and Robert Isaac McCartney's son's (Jacob R. McCartney) daughter Lydia, was buried next to a "Wright Devore" in Glendale Union Cemetery, Cardington, OH, evidently another Devore relative.

The 1850 Federal Census of Mt. Pleasant Twp., Jefferson Co., OH lists another possible McCartney relative--Robert McCartney (age 43, born about 1807), wife Margaret (age 36) and children George (18), Elizabeth (16), Robert (14), Samuel (11), Louis (10), Alfred (8), Joseph (4), and Margaret (2). Jefferson Co. borders Columbiana Co. where other known relatives of Robert and Lydia Martha (Runk) McCartney lived.
