Children of Robert Isaac McCartney & Lydia Martha Runk

Robert Isaac McCartney (September 21, 1791 - December 24, 1837)
Robert Isaac McCartney, the oldest son of Ephraim and Ann (Sanford) McCartney, was born September 21, 1791, in Mifflin Co., PA and married Lydia Martha Runk December 31, 1811 in Westmoreland Co., PA. They had eight known children, the first two being girls and the others boys.

In 1820, Robert and family were residing in Bedford Co., PA (1820 Federal Census -- Microfilm # M33-98). On August 14, 1833, the family began their move from Washington Co., PA, to Washington Twp., Marion Co. (now Morrow Co.--see map on right) OH. They arrived at Ashland on August 20th. Six days later they started for Washington Twp., finally arriving on the 28th. Two years after on August 25, 1835, the family moved to nearby Cardington Twp. within the same county. Robert purchased 82 acres of land for $400 in Marion Co. on December 31, 1836 from James S. Sellers. Six months later on June 17, 1837 and also six months prior to his death, Robert sold 70.5 acres of land to a Peter Doty for $430 [General Index to Deeds, Vol: Mc; 1828-; Marion Co., OH].

Robert died at the age of 46 in Cardington Twp., Marion Co., OH. One of Robert's grandchildren, Lydia A. (daughter of Jacob R.), passed away in the same township July 16, 1851 at the age of 1 year, 3 months and 20 days and was buried in section 22 of Glendale Cemetery in Cardington Twp., Morrow Co., OH. Her plot is quite large with no other headstones in close proximity (see photos above). It is possible Robert was buried in the same plot fourteen years earlier without a headstone or a headstone that no longer exists.

Lydia Martha Runk (July 1, 1794 - August 22, 1870)
Lydia Martha Runk was born July 1, 1794 in Lancaster Co., PA and died at the age of 76, in Wilton Junction, Muscatine Co., IA. Sometime after the death of her husband in Cardington Twp., Lydia returned to Washington Twp. before finally traveling on to Iowa on September 13, 1852. Federal census records list her and children as follows in 1840 and 1850:

1840 Washington Twp., Marion Co., OH
Washington Twp. lists Lydia McCartney and children residing: Males: 1 (5-9)--Isaac R.; 2 (10-14)--George & Paden; 3 (15-19)--Jacob, Robert & Daniel. / Females 1 (5-9)--Elizabeth; 1 (10-14)--Catherine; 1 (40-49)--Lydia. [Note, according to Robert’s will (assuming Robert attempted to list his children in birth order), Catherine should be approx. 19 in 1840. It is possible that Robert incorrectly listed Catherine before Jacob when she should have followed Jacob, as Jacob was born in 1823 and Paden in 1827 (gap allows for another birth between), which would put her closer to the census age. Or, she was a twin to Paden (Paden’s daughter had twins)].

1850 Morrow Co. OH
Cardington Twp. (495/497) lists Lydia (55), and sons Daniel (33), Robert (31), Washington (20), and Isaac (17). Two years after the 1850 census on September 13th, Lydia left for Iowa to spend the remainder of her life with relatives.

The 1870 federal census of Muscatine Co., IA [page 577 (190-204)], lists Lydia, age 78, born in PA, living with son Jacob R. McCartney and his family. Lydia and sons Isaac R. (Isaac R.'s wife Mary and their son William), Daniel, Robert, and Robert's infant child, are all buried in Isaac R.'s plot (section E, Lot 44) in Oakdale Cemetery, Wilton, IA (see image below).

Lydia's father, Michael Runk (whose father’s name was also Michael), was born in 1765 in Lancaster Co., PA. Michael married Mary Schowalter, her senior by three months, in 1786, in Lancaster Co., PA. Mary Schowalter, who was of German descent, was born in 1765, in Lancaster Co., PA. Michael and Mary had nine or ten children, seven of whom lived to adult age. Lydia Martha Runk was the fourth child and the third of the girls. Michael Runk died at the age of 54 in Westmoreland Co., PA, April 4, 1819, and his wife Mary at the age of 81, in Stark Co., OH, April 29, 1846.

Original plot book-Oakdale Cemetery. Lydia M. (Runk) McCartney listed as #6.
