1751-1772
Emigration from Ireland to PA
Assuming Ephraim's father was between the ages of 18-21 at the time of Ephraim's
birth in 1772, it is probable he emigrated from Ulster between 1751-1772 prior
to the American Revolutionary War.
1772 Lancaster
Co., PA
Birth of Ephraim McCartney September 20, 1772 in Lancaster Co., PA.
1790 Mifflin
Co., PA
Marriage of Ephraim McCartney to Ann Sanford in Mifflin Co.,
PA. 1790 Federal Census lists Ephraim and family residing in Mifflin
Co. as well as other McCartneys:
[Males: (16+)(<16) / Females: (all)(all other free persons)(slaves)]
William (1, 2, 4, 0, 0)--pg. 104
Wm (1, 0, 1, 0, 0)--pg. 120
Ephraim (1, 1, 1, 0, 0)--pg. 127
George (1, 1, 4, 0, 0)--pg. 129
Sarah (3, 1, 2, 0, 0)--pg. 132
1800 York
Co., PA
1800 Federal Census (pg.3) lists an Ephraim McCartney/McCourtney
and family residing in Fawn, York Co.: Males 1 (<10); 2 (10-15); 0 (16-25);
1 (26-44); 0 (45+) / Females 1 (<10); 2 (10-15); 0 (16-25); 0 (26-44);
1 (45+); 0 (all other free persons); 0 (slaves). I don’t think
this Ephraim McCourtney, or Ephraim M. Courtney (as the document is written)
in the land warrant for York county, is our Ephraim. There is an Ephraim McCourtney
(name appears as McCurtney or McCourtney) that consistently lives in York
county in the 1800, 1810 & 1820 census. This Ephraim McCourtney dies in
York county 4 Nov 1822. This family, always McCourtney or var., has descendants
that stay in York county and their lineage is well-documented. It is interesting
to note though, that a Robert and James Duncan are residing nearby (pg. 2),
also in Fawn. The Duncan family later married into the McCartney family,
beginning with child #2, Anna (McCartney) Duncan, who married a Robert B.
Duncan in 1830.

Westmoreland Co., PA1810 Federal Census lists Ephraim McCartney, residing two counties west of Bedford Co., in Mt. Also listed in this census living nearby in the same township as Ephraim was a Michael Runk (2-0-0-0-1-0-1-1-0-1-1-0), (pg. 3); most likely the father-in-law of Robert Isaac McCartney.

The 1830 Federal Census lists Robert Isaac McCartney and family living in
Nottingham Twp.: Males 2 (<5); 2 (5-10); 1 (10-15); 0 (15-20); 0 (20-30);
1 (30-40); 0 (40-50); 0 (50-60); 0 (60-70); 0 (70-80); 0 (80-90); 0 (90-100);

0 (100+).
1832 -- 1833
Washington Co., PA
Birth of child No. 8, Isaac R. (source: McCartney family bible).
On August 14, 1833, Robert Isaac McCartney and family began their move from
Washington Co., PA, to Washington Twp., Marion Co., OH. [In 1848 that area
of Ohio became what is now referred to as Morrow Co.]
1833 -- 1838
Morrow Co., OH
They arrived at Ashland, OH August 20th. They started on the
26th for Washington Twp., finally arriving on the 28th. On August 25,
1835 the family moved to nearby Cardington Twp. within the same county. Robert
died in Cardington two years later. After the death of her husband, Lydia
returned to Washington Co., PA on March 31, 1838 where she remained for the
next fourteen years.
1840 Washington
Co., PA
The 1840 Federal Census of Washington Co., PA lists Lydia McCartney
and children residing: Males: 1 (5-9)--Isaac R.; 2 (10-14)--George & Paden;
3 (15-19)--Jacob, Robert & Daniel. / Females 1 (5-9)--Elizabeth; 1 (10-14)--Catherine;
1 (40-49)--Lydia. [Note, according to Robert’s will (assuming Robert
attempted to list his children in birth order), Catherine should be approx.
19 in 1840. It is possible that Robert incorrectly listed Catherine before
Jacob when she should have followed Jacob, as Jacob was born in 1823 and Paden
in 1827 (gap allows for another birth between), which would put her closer
to the census age. Or, she was a twin to Paden (Paden’s daughter had
twins)].
1852 -- 1870
Between 1852-1870, many of the McCartney families and family members
moved to Tipton, Cedar Co. IA, and then on to nearby Wilton Junction, Muscatine
Co., with the exception of Mary R. McCartney and her husband Reuben Story
who remained behind in Iberia, OH.
