1751-1772 Emigration from Ireland to PA
Assuming Ephraim's father was between the ages of 18-21 at the time of Ephraim's birth in 1772, it is probable he emigrated from Ulster between 1751-1772 prior to the American Revolutionary War.

Birth of Ephraim McCartney September 20, 1772 in Lancaster Co., PA.

1790 Mifflin Co., PA
Marriage of Ephraim McCartney to Ann Sanford in Mifflin Co., PA. 1790 Federal Census lists Ephraim and family residing in Mifflin Co.: Males 1 (16+); 1 (<16) / Females 1; 0 (all other free persons); 0 (slaves), (pg. 127). Other McCartney families also listed in the 1790 census for Mifflin were: William (1-2-4-0-0), (pg. 104); Wm (1-0-1-0-0), (pg. 120); George (1-1-4-0-0), (pg. 129); and Sarah (3-1-2-0-0), (pg. 132). Ephraim's father-in-law, Abram Sanford (1-0-1-0-0), (pg. 126) is listed as residing near Ephraim at the time of the census. Another probable relative of Ephraim, Abrm Sanford (1-2-1-0-0), (pg. 121) is listed as well. Mifflin Co. was established a year earlier from portions of Cumberland and Northumberland counties.

1800 Federal Census lists Ephraim McCartney and family residing in Fawn, York Co.: Males 1 (<10); 2 (10-15); 0 (16-25); 1 (26-44); 0 (45+) / Females 1 (<10); 2 (10-15); 0 (16-25); 0 (26-44); 1 (45+); 0 (all other free persons); 0 (slaves), (pg. 3). It is interesting to note that a Robert and James Duncan are residing nearby (pg. 2), also in Fawn. The Duncan family later married into the McCartney family, beginning with child #2, Anna (McCartney) Duncan, who married a Robert B. Duncan in 1830.

Birth of child No. 1 - Mary R. (source: McCartney family bible). Bedford was formed as a county from Cumberland Co. in 1771. Later, the Bedford area was subdivided and further subdivided into Blair, Cambria, Fayette, Fulton, Greene, Huntingdon, Somerset, Westmoreland and Washington counties.

1810 Federal Census lists Ephraim McCartney, residing two counties west of Bedford Co., in Mt. Pleasant Twp.: Males 2 (<10); 2 (10-15); 1 (16-25); 1 (26-44); 0 (45+) / Females: 0 (<10); 1 (10-15); 0 (16-25); 0 (26-44); 1 (45+ ); 0 (all other free persons); 0 (slaves), (pg. 4). Also listed in this census living nearby in the same township as Ephraim was a Michael Runk (2-0-0-0-1-0-1-1-0-1-1-0), (pg. 3); most likely the father-in-law of Robert Isaac McCartney.

1820 Federal Census (Microfilm # M33-98, page 11A, line 18), finds the family of Robert Isaac McCartney living in the District Bedford Boro/Bedford Twp.: Males 2 (<10); 0 (10-16); 0 (16-18); 1 (16-26); 0 (26-45); 0 (45+) / Females: 1 (<10); 1 (10-16); 1 (16-26); 0 (26-45); 0 (45+); 1 (engaged in agriculture); 0 (slaves).

York Co., PA
1820 Federal Census, lists Ephraim McCartney, residing three counties east of Bedford Co., in Peach Bottom Twp.: Males 1 (10-16); 1 (16-26); 1 (45+ ) / Females: 1 (10-16); 2 (16-26); 1 (45+ ); 3 (engaged in agriculture).

1823 -- 1833 Washington Co., PA
Birth of children No. 5 - 8. Jacob (1823), Paden (1827), George (1829) and Isaac (1833) (source: McCartney family bible). Ephraim McCartney's death occurred in this county September 9, 1825. The 1830 Federal Census lists Robert Isaac McCartney and family living in Nottingham Twp.: Males 2 (<5); 2 (5-10); 1 (10-15); 0 (15-20); 0 (20-30); 1 (30-40); 0 (40-50); 0 (50-60); 0 (60-70); 0 (70-80); 0 (80-90); 0 (90-100); 0 (100+) / Females: 1 (<5); 0 (5-10); 0 (10-15); 2 (15-20); 0 (20-30); 1 (30-40); 0 (40-50); 0 (50-60); 0 (60-70); 0 (70-80); 0 (80-90); 0 (90-100); 0 (100+). Washington was formed as a county from Westmoreland Co. in 1781.

1833 -- 1852 Morrow Co., OH
On August 14, 1833, Robert Isaac McCartney and family began their move from Washington Co., PA, to Washington Twp., Morrow Co., OH. They arrived at Ashland, August 20th. They started on the 26th for Washington Twp., finally arriving on the 28th. On August 25, 1835 the family moved to nearby Cardington Twp. within the same county. Robert died in Cardington two years later. After the death of her husband, Lydia returned to Washington Twp., (OH), March 31, 1838 where she remained for the next fourteen years until 1852. It should be noted that Morrow Co. OH was not formed until 1848. Up until 1848 the area was still considered to be a part of Marion Co.

1852 -- 1870
Between 1852-1870, many of the McCartney families and family members moved to Tipton, Cedar Co. IA, and then on to nearby Wilton Junction, Muscatine Co., with the exception of Mary R. McCartney and her husband Reuben Storey who remained behind in Iberia, OH.
